Alaska: Friendship in Eagle River

Our second destination in Alaska was Eagle River

Eagle River is a suburb of Anchorage. Funny enough we never thought we would travel to Alaska in our fifth wheel... until we met a wonderful family from Alaska.

Perk of Full Time RV-ing: Meeting Other Full Timers

We met them in Rhode Island...

then again in South Carolina...

then again in Florida.

They were on the road for a year with their two kids as well. Our families clicked and they mentioned that we should come up to Alaska and that we could stay on their property, so we did!

What an example of generosity this family is. They opened their home to us, offered their vehicle, were excellent tour guides, shared meals, and even booked Scott and my son their very first fishing charter as a gift!

I only hope to get the opportunity to pay it forward one day, just like they did.

Things To Do Near Anchorage

While staying at their house in Eagle River, we hiked Bodenburg Butte. It was a beautiful trail, with A LOT of stairs, but still very kid friendly.

While on the hike, we connected with some other families. A few of them had been Full Time families as well, but loved Alaska so much, they never left.

We also met a remarkable mom who carried her child on her back while conquering those stairs!

All the women I have met in Alaska are so capable and impressive. I love the outdoor culture there, and I especially love how they hike Alaska’s intense mountains - all while sporting earrings.

Their house is a short drive from the Nature Center. What a peaceful place! Well... other than a mama Grizzly and her cubs roaming around! We didn't encounter them, but we were prepared with bear spray

During our trip, we took on the challenging Mile High Saddle Trail, ascending nearly1500 ft. in elevation.

The trail proved to be quite a test for me, but the kids effortlessly raced up the mountain. Thankfully, my friend Kathy kindly stayed by my side, offering encouragement throughout the hike.

Despite doubting I'd make it, I pushed through and accomplished the climb, which felt incredibly rewarding.

On our journey, we even spotted a black bear from a safe distance. I must admit, I have a soft spot for black bears; they look adorable and clumsy when they run.

I love to hike, it is my favorite form of exercise, and favorite activity to do on the road. I love being surrounded by nature because it brings me a profound sense of connection to my Creator.

Though I may not be the best hiker, and require lots of breaks, the satisfaction of reaching the summit, especially knowing the descent awaits, is unparalleled.

Not only is hiking free and good exercise, but it is the ultimate way to explore new places. Hiking truly centers and rejuvenates us during our journeys.

Lastly, while in Eagle River, we had to check out Anchorage. Our first stop was Ship Creek to watch people snag Salmon, something we would have the opportunity to try soon afterward.

What an unforgettable experience! We even witnessed a dispute when a tourist cut the line of a local woman fishing with her kids. Our hearts went out to her, knowing she was simply trying to provide fish for her family.

In Alaska, fishing is deeply ingrained in the way of life, ensuring a bountiful supply of food to sustain communities during the long winter months.

While in Anchorage, we also visited Blaines Art Supply for my daughter, she is quite the artist. It was a cute upscale art store, but unfortunately, the marker she bought from there was dry and we never got the chance to return it.

We also got to visit Kincaid Park. What a beautiful place, it was so green! Many people spot moose there.

We didn't spot any moose in Kincaid Park, but we did see a mama moose and her two calves in our friend's front yard! Again, I love moose…from a distance.

Places to Eat in Anchorage

Any trip to Anchorage would be lacking without enjoying a pizza from Moose's Tooth Pub & Pizzeria. We enjoyed this treat for our “celebration meal”. I love this phrase, it sounds much more enjoyable than“cheat meal."

Their pizza is unique and tasty. Additionally, you have the option to order their pizza and finish cooking it at home in your oven for approximately 10 minutes, ensuring you don't compromise on its quality.

Although we didn't get a chance to try it, we heard that Wild Scoops in Anchorage has a Baked Alaska Cone to die for. We will have to try it next time!

I can't forget to mention I found my very first geocache down the street from their house! I was excited because the kids usually find them before I do.

Have You Ever Geocached?

Geocaching presents a fantastic family activity, encouraging outdoor exploration while providing a treasure hunt experience. It's an enjoyable way to discover new areas, exercise critical thinking skills, and, most importantly, have fun!

Our stay at our friend's house was packed full with fellowship and sight seeing.

My son played from the moment he woke up to the moment he went to bed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with our new friends. We are inspired by their adventurous spirit, generosity, knowledge, and focus on family.

My kids had so much fun with them, they are already asking if we could fly them back to Alaska next summer to go fishing!

Bible Verse of the Day

Hebrews 13:16

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

Reflection

  • Throughout our Roadschool journey, we've encountered incredibly generous families, and I've prayed for even more blessings to come their way.

  • Witnessing their kindness has inspired me, leading to a sense of conviction to be more generous myself.

  • I've come to recognize how my shyness has hindered me from expressing generosity, and I'm actively working on overcoming it, determined to bless others just as I have been blessed.

My heartfelt prayer for each of us is that God grants us the chance to bless someone else today, even if it's as simple as giving our time. May God bless each of us with abundance, and may we, in turn, pay it forward.
