The Beginning of our Second Chapter on the Road: Tucson, Arizona

Our "Second Chapter" unfolded near Tucson, Arizona, a place we hadn't explored before. We enjoyed discovering pristine caves, a creative town, and an old western spot. It turned out to be the perfect location for my son's eleventh birthday – he even said it was his "best birthday ever."

Our Camp Spots

During our journey, we stayed at Triangle T Ranch, a unique campground nestled within a working ranch. Though priced at $40/night, the expense was justified by the scenic surroundings, complete with horses freely roaming and its strategic location for exploring nearby activities.

On our second visit to the area, God secured us the last spot at Davis Monthan Fam Camp, operating on a first-come, first-served basis. We were positioned at site 117 with 30 AMP and Full Hook-ups. While the Boneyard was unfortunately closed, the base's appeal and easy gate access made it a delightful stay.

First Adventure: Kartchner Caverns State Park

For an authentic and less touristy cave experience, prioritize Kartchner Caverns. Joining full-time friends, we embarked on the Throne Room Cave Tour, where the vastness of the Throne Room, equivalent to three football fields, left a lasting impression.

Discovered in 1974 and deliberately kept secret for over a decade to ensure preservation, Kartchner Caverns opened to the public in 1999. Notably, the caverns showcase one of the world's largest soda straw stalactites, measuring an impressive 21 feet.

Exploring the dynamic, living caves of Kartchner Caverns comes with a set of important guidelines:

  • Avoid touching formations to preserve the cave's growth.
  • Refrain from flash photography, as it can harm the delicate cave environment (which is why I don't have any pictures, you will just have to visit for yourself!)
  • Stick to designated paths to protect the cave floor.
  • No food or drink is allowed to maintain a pristine environment.
  • Smoking is strictly prohibited.
  • Always follow the knowledgeable tour guide's instructions.

Our tour experience was enriched by the commitment to keeping the caves vibrant and untouched, showcasing the dedication to their preservation.

Second Adventure: Bisbee

Our first birthday celebration stop led us to Bisbee, where my son eagerly anticipated the  Queen Mine Tour. Descending into this historic copper mine, we delved into the challenges faced by miners in the early 1900s, discovering it was one of the richest copper mines.

The tour, enhanced by hard hats and a mine train ride, became even more enjoyable with our knowledgeable, friendly, and humorous guide. Reservations made in advance ensured a seamless experience, even allowing us quirky photo moments.

Post-tour, we indulged in samples at Bisbee Olive Oil, securing my son's favorite aged balsamic vinegar for his cherished tortellini. Our culinary journey continued at Bisbee Coffee Company Cafe & Roasters, savoring coffee and sandwiches.

With satisfied appetites, my daughter and I explored a charming bookstore before setting off for our next adventure.

Third Adventure: Tombstone

Continuing the birthday celebration, we headed to Tombstone for the second half of my son's special day. Our time in this historic town included exploring the Birdcage, enjoying a skit at the Oriental Saloon, and capturing memories with an old-timey photo. Tombstone turned out to be Brody's favorite stop, truly a dream come true for an eleven-year-old boy.

Last Adventure: Horseback Riding

Our campground provided an exciting horseback riding tour, adding adventure to our stay. The informative trail ride revealed the campground's historical significance as a Japanese Camp during WWII. Spotting wildlife became a highlight, thanks to Scott's keen eye capturing Javelina and a six-point deer. While my son thoroughly enjoyed the experience, my daughter, not so much.

Overall Experience:

Our hosts at Triangle T Ranch were not only welcoming but also informative, sharing valuable insights into camp hosting. Their granddaughter found a little crush on my son, and we also met a lady from Alabama who exchanged work for housing after a sudden life change. She was open and willing to share her experiences with us along with good tips for when we visited Alabama.Connecting with diverse people remains one of the highlights of our nomadic lifestyle.

Bible Verse

Matthew 18:20 (ESV)

For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

Reflection

This verse came to life in our conversation with our neighbor tonight as we reflected on the belief that there are no coincidences, only God's divine plan. Witnessing the Holy Spirit in others and engaging in uplifting conversations rejuvenates my soul. In those moments, as joy and awe envelop us, I am profoundly aware of God's presence, creating a sacred and inspiring connection among us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I lift my praise to You as a God who seeks a personal and engaged connection with me. I'm grateful for the gift of companionship. Your divine timing brings people into our lives precisely when we need encouragement or wisdom. My heart longs for Your presence, and I'm humbled by Your desire to be with me. Your continuous wonders and the joy You bring astonish me. How fortunate I am to find true freedom in You! In Jesus' name, Amen.
