Exploring New Orleans in an RV

Embarking on the open road as full-time RVers opens doors to unexpected detours and unforgettable experiences. When our journey led us to Louisiana, we couldn't fathom missing out on the vibrant charm of New Orleans. Although a breakdown briefly halted our plans, fate smiled upon us two years later, guiding us back to the heart of the Big Easy.

With the scent of freshly made beignets beckoning us, we eagerly anticipated the colorful streets, ready to immerse ourselves in the rich history, tantalizing flavors, and vibrant culture that define this iconic city. Join us as we unravel the ins and outs of New Orleans, one adventure at a time.

St. Bernard State Park

I sought serenity and nature just beyond the city's reach, a mere 20-minute drive away. St. Bernard proved to be the ideal retreat. Its picturesque park offered safety and tranquility, with site 5 standing out as the perfect location. At just $28 per night for water and electric amenities, it was a fair deal.

The symphony of tree frogs and crickets transported me back to the enchanting ambiance of Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Each day, we explored a two-mile trail in the park, encountering numerous armadillos along the way. For anyone seeking a connection with nature while camping near New Orleans, I wholeheartedly recommend this park.

City Park

Our initial excursion led us to City Park, a cherished destination in the area. We enjoyed the bustling farmer’s market, where we procured the most delectable pork loin I've ever savored. The farmer proudly shared that his pigs feast on blackberries and nuts from his farm, resulting in meat so tender and flavorful.

Tip: Bring along an ice chest to fully indulge in all the park has to offer.

Afterwards, we strolled through the park, admiring its lush greenery, majestic trees, and the playful ducks dotting our path, eventually making our way to Cafe Du Monde.

I eagerly anticipated sinking my teeth into their renowned beignets, and they certainly lived up to their reputation. I also treated myself to a cafe au lait infused with chicory.

Tip: Sprinkle any extra powdered sugar into your coffee for an extra delightful treat.

Following our satisfying feast, we meandered over to the Art Museum, where we explored the captivating Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, a free attraction that provided ample entertainment for the kids.

Although we didn't manage to fit it in, another must-do activity here is a visit to the Botanical Gardens.

Exploring the Heart of New Orleans

Choosing the free parking at Crescent Park, we embarked on a peaceful stroll along the Mississippi River, admiring the passing paddle boats while reflecting on the challenges faced by the city, visible in the scattered litter and signs of poverty.

In the vibrant atmosphere of the French Market, I talked to Kevin Guillard, a young man who had recently been released from prison and sold me his book, "Hood Struggle" a testament to resilience amid adversity. I am a sucker for the underdog.

As we wandered through the French Quarter, we were captivated by its rich history and architectural beauty, all the while aware of the complex realities of urban life, including homelessness and struggles with addiction.

Seeking a quieter ambiance, we ventured into the absolutely gorgeous Garden District and explored Magazine Street, where we found solace in the charm of antique shops, architecture, and local eateries, offering a different perspective on the city's diverse tapestry of experiences.

Oak Alley Plantation

After an eventful day in NOLA, we had one day left to explore. Giving the kids a choice between the WWII Museum and Oak Alley Plantation, they both opted for a glimpse into another aspect of the state, leading us to embark on a journey of over an hour to reach the plantation.

Upon arrival, the plantation's beauty was immediately apparent, with its iconic oak-lined pathway living up to its name. As we took a tour, learning about the lives of both the enslaved individuals and the families who resided there, we were deeply moved by the richness of the culture. The tour, presented in an informative and unbiased manner, quickly became the highlight of our trip.

After immersing ourselves in the plantation's history, we indulged in the local flavors at the on-site restaurant, savoring every bite of our meal and relishing in some well-deserved dessert.

I look forward to returning one day to explore the WWII Museum, as I've heard it's truly impressive. With its extensive exhibits and wealth of information, it's said that one could easily spend multiple days there to fully absorb everything it has to offer.

Overall Experience

  • New Orleans has its allure, but for me, the real magic lay beyond the bustling French Quarter. Despite not being a city person, a drinker, or a seafood aficionado, I found myself captivated by the city's vibrant culture, which reminded me of the lively atmosphere of Jamaica.

  • Our plans to explore NOLA initially coincided with a tumultuous period marked by the challenges of COVID, vaccination requirements, and civil unrest. Stranded in Ville Platte due to a breakdown, we had no choice but to put our visit on hold. Concerns from locals about safety during that time only reinforced our decision.

  • Looking back, I'm grateful for the unexpected delay. Two years later, with our children now teenagers, we were able to experience New Orleans fully, unencumbered by COVID restrictions, and truly immerse ourselves in its rich tapestry of culture and history.

Bible Verse

Proverbs 16:9 (NASB):

"The mind of man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps."

Reflection

This verse is a reminder that while we make our own plans, ultimately it is God who determines our steps. It is wise to acknowledge that while our own intentions are important, we must trust God’s sovereignty over our lives. His ways are always the best ways.

Four Ways to Apply This Verse to Our Lives:

1. Trust in God's Plan: Recognize that even when our plans don't unfold as expected, God is still in control. Trust that He has a purpose and direction for our lives, even in the midst of detours and delays.

2. Flexibility: Be open to changes in plans and embrace unexpected opportunities that arise along the way. Sometimes, the greatest blessings come from situations we didn't anticipate.

3. Prayerful Consideration: Involve God in your decision-making process. Seek His guidance and wisdom as you make plans for your life, and be willing to adjust those plans according to His leading.

4. Gratitude: Whether our plans succeed or are altered, cultivate a heart of gratitude for the journey and the lessons learned along the way. Recognize that every step, even the detours, is an opportunity for growth and transformation.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We are grateful for your unwavering guidance along our journey. Reflecting on the twists and turns, it's evident that your plans surpass our own. Grant me the strength to trust you wholeheartedly, to remain adaptable, to seek your wisdom, and to find joy in every circumstance. You are the source of all goodness, and I rest in the assurance of your unchanging love.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
