Crossing into Canada from the charming border town of Bonners Ferry, Idaho was the perfect start to our latest family adventure.
The border crossing felt almost cinematic—complete with the classic checklist of questions: Any weapons? Drugs? Alcohol? Tobacco? The customs officers also asked how long we planned to stay and what brought us north.
Once satisfied with our answers, they waved us through. The road stretched ahead into the Canadian Rockies, brimming with possibility.
First Stop: Redstreak Campground, Kootenay National Park
We had visited Canada years ago, but this trip was special—my heart was set on seeing the Canadian Rockies up close. Our first stop was Redstreak Campground in Kootenay National Park, near Radium Hot Springs.
Tucked into the trees with spacious full hookup sites, the campground was beautiful. But our peaceful arrival didn’t last long…
RV Emergency: How We Replaced Our Leaf Spring Bolts in the Middle of Nowhere
The moment we parked, we noticed two leaf spring bolts were missing from our trailer.
Cue Scott’s mini panic. I always remind him: If you can work on helicopters, you can fix our little trailer! Luckily, there was a Napa Auto Parts nearby, and we grabbed the parts we needed.
The real problem? Everything was seized up. Scott couldn’t get the leverage to install the bolts. That’s when I—ever the “Call Your Dad” advocate—stepped in.
Despite his eye roll, Scott took my advice. With teamwork from Scott, his dad, and our son, they used tie-downs around the tires, a long piece of wood, and a bottle jack (not to be confused with a bottle of Jack!) to line everything up.
It was like watching three generations of MacGyver in action.
Faith in the Fix
As they worked under the trailer, I silently prayed for safety. Watching our son holding that heavy piece of wood with such determination moved me.
Once again, God was faithful—no injuries, no hospital visits, and the trailer was road-ready.
The whole situation reminded us that doubt can turn into determination.
With help from others and God, obstacles shrink.
Hidden Hot Springs Near Banff National Park
My original plan included a hike to the hidden hot spring waterfall in Fairmont Hot Springs. From the RV Resort,, there’s a small trail leading down to the free springs. They’re not quite as hot as the main pool but still warm and beautiful in the summer.
Another on my wish list: Lussier Hot Springs in Whiteswan Provincial Park—also free and tucked in nature. We didn’t make it there this time, but it’s officially on my “must-return” list.
Our Favorite Experience in Kootenay National Park.
With limited time, we chose the trail from our campground down to Radium Hot Springs.
The soak was perfect—not too crowded—with both a hot pool and a cold plunge pool (the only way you’ll ever get me to cold dip is with the promise of a hot soak after!). Surprisingly, the cold dip left me energized.
On our hike back, we spotted about 40 bighorn sheep grazing near the trail. Seeing them against the mountain backdrop was unforgettable. Evenings at Redstreak were magical, with campfires made from pre-chopped wood and bighorn sheep wandering into the campground.
Hebrews 10:25 (NLT)
And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Reflection: Finding Fellowship on the Road
- As full-time travelers, we don’t often stay put long enough for a home church group. But God has given us fellowship through each other and the friends we meet along the way.
- Scott and I have started reading the Bible together every morning. These moments bring new perspectives, deeper conversations, and joy when our kids join in. We also listen to teachings from the pastors of two family members daily.
- Phone calls, text messages, and impromptu prayers with friends keep us connected. This community—no matter where we find it—has been a source of encouragement, accountability, and spiritual growth.
I’m learning to stay humble, receptive to wisdom, and open to God’s grace through others. My prayer is that each of us makes space in our lives for connection and encouragement, pointing each other toward Christ.
