Our Kenai Peninsula adventure wrapped up in Homer, Alaska, a quirky and artsy little town fondly called the “End of the Road.” It’s literally where the Alaska Highway System stops, nestled between breathtaking mountains and ocean views. Homer’s tagline, “where the land ends and the sea begins,” sums it up perfectly.
Come along as we explore Homer, Alaska—marveling at God’s breathtaking creation, experiencing His love through new friendships, and learning to cherish each day as a precious gift.
Where We Stayed:
What a treat to be able to pack our freezer full of fresh fish! We even shared some with friends in Canada, whose 80-year-old father inspired me to start this blog. Talk about full-circle blessings!
My prayer for us all is that we will let go of our guilt, give our struggles to God, and be confident in our fresh starts. May we praise God for his compassion, mercy, and faithfulness that he joyfully gives us each and every moment of every day.
Where We Stayed: Homer Spit
We treated ourselves and stayed right on the Homer Spit—a strip of land jutting into Kachemak Bay. Yes, it’s tourist central, but OH, THE VIEWS! Picture a 360-degree panorama of sparkling ocean and snow-capped mountains.
It was just a short walk to the beach, where our kids spent hours constructing driftwood forts.
Their mission? To create structures strong enough to withstand the relentless “enemy”—a.k.a. the waves. When the tide rolled in, their forts were obliterated, and the battle began again at low tide.
I told myself this counted as a history lesson. After all, they were reenacting World War II, right?
$75/ night for non- residents.

Best Things to do in Homer, Alaska
1. Fishing Charter
The highlight of Scott’s graduation gift from friends was a fishing charter! Scott and the boys caught halibut, rockfish, cod, and—wait for it—a lingcod that was nearly as big as my son! It was a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Even more magical? They spotted a pod of orcas swimming by their boat. Talk God showing off!
By the end of the day, everyone was wiped out… except Scott, who sneakily filmed everyone sleeping on the drive home.
While the boys fished, the rest of us indulged at Two Sisters Bakery. The chocolate bread is a MUST—so good, it sells out early. We also devoured a sticky bun and a few savory goodies.

From there, we strolled to theAlaska Island and Oceans Visitor Center. which featured an interactive exhibit and a fascinating film about local wildlife.
A short trail led us to a quieter beach, where we soaked in the serene vibes and spotted Sandhill Cranes. Compared to the bustling Homer Spit, this beach felt like a hidden gem.
3. Creatures of the Dock Tour
We celebrated our friend’s birthday with Harry Potter decorations and a decadent triple chocolate cake, but the real highlight for him was the Creatures of the Dock Tour.
Picture us lying on our bellies, reaching into the water to touch fascinating sea creatures while learning incredible facts.
We even got to hold a sea star (not a “starfish,” as I was repeatedly corrected).
On our last day, we ventured to the Beluga Wetlands Overlook, a peaceful spot near the airport with gorgeous views. I also treated myself to a pair of Salmon Sisters XTRATUF boots, which have become my go-to camping footwear. Functional AND stylish—who knew?
Overall Experience
Homer truly captured our hearts. From the rugged beauty of Kachemak Bay to the warm community vibes, it’s no wonder the Kenai Peninsula is called Alaska’s playground. Whether you’re fishing, hiking, or simply soaking in the scenery, there’s something for everyone.
As a child, I dreamed of visiting Alaska but only imagined places like Fairbanks or Anchorage. Homer wasn’t even on my radar. I am grateful to God for bringing these friends into our life and for showing us His beauty and power through His creation.
Overcoming the Emotional Waves
- Not every moment on the road is picture-perfect. After so much socializing recently, I woke up one day feeling emotionally drained. I prayed for comfort but didn’t feel immediate relief.
- Then, a beautiful, encouraging text popped up on my phone. It reminded me of the impact our lifestyle has on others and lifted my spirits.
- That evening, during Bible study, our son joined us and lovingly called me out for being overly critical lately. His wisdom was both convicting and encouraging. God often speaks through our children if we’re willing to listen.
- The next morning, Scott and I shared our struggles during our quiet time with God. We reminded each other of His unchanging love and the fresh starts He gives us daily. He turns my mistakes into good and is faithful in answering my prayers to search my heart and reveal to me where I struggle.
Lamentations 3:22-23
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
My prayer for us all is that we will let go of our guilt, give our struggles to God, and be confident in our fresh starts. May we praise God for his compassion, mercy, and faithfulness that he joyfully gives us each and every moment of every day.
