Our Roadtrip Finale in Gilroy, CA

As we embarked on the final stretch of our incredible road trip, we found ourselves in the enchanting town of Gilroy, CA, a place where the very essence of garlic fills the air, earning it the well-deserved title of "The Garlic Capital of the World." For all you garlic lovers out there, this is a destination that will awaken your taste buds and leave you eagerly anticipating the flavors to come.

The Road to Gilroy

Our journey led us through the challenging coastal roads, which left us in awe of the breathtaking scenery as we departed from Caspar Beach. However, a twist of fate awaited us as we encountered the notorious San Francisco traffic on the 101. Fortunately, as we ventured further inland, the traffic cleared, making way for another adventure—a series of steep, narrow, and winding roads leading us to our campground.

Yet, the real adventure began when my son decided to join his Aunt and Uncle in their motorhome. Little did he know that he would bear witness to their youngest one's upset tummy, the struggle of the oldest to avoid being next in line, and his Aunt's heroic efforts to clean up the vomit among the twists and turns of the road—complete with the unforgettable image of her stepping into the mess with her socks, just another day on the road!

A Night by the Lake

Our spontaneous stay at Coyote Lake Harvey Bear Ranch County Park was filled with ups and downs. While we are no strangers to county park stays, the $44 per night fee for electric only sites, felt a bit steep for an overnight adventure. The winding road that led to the campground added an element of anxiety to our journey, and the widespread aroma of garlic served as a reminder of Gilroy's culinary prowess.

The payoff, however, was well worth it. The park's scenic lakeside location left us in awe, and a fortunate encounter with a group of graceful deer during our evening stroll added a touch of magic to our experience. A word of caution: this park is also home to daring Javelina Pigs, so be sure to utilize the provided food lockers to ensure a safe and enjoyable stay.

Amidst the trials and tribulations of our road trip, it felt as though we were being showered with divine blessings from above. Being in the stage of raising teenagers, we had almost forgotten the immense joys and challenging moments that come with little ones. Surprisingly, we found ourselves not overwhelmed, but rather with a newfound respect for my sister and brother-in-law, who handled endless sleepless nights and early mornings with grace.

Our challenges transformed into cherished memories that made us laugh, and we made the most of our time together, exploring every opportunity and proudly declaring our journey a resounding success.

Bible Verse

Hebrews 12:11 NLT

"No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way."

Reflection: Shaping Character with Love and Patience

  • Parenting isn't always a walk in the park, especially when you have toddlers who thrive on routine, play, nourishment, and rest. Witnessing their moments of distress can be heart-wrenching, but it's vital to understand that discipline plays a pivotal role in shaping their character, instilling values, and guiding them on the path of right and wrong. Time-outs, as we discovered, can be effective, leading to improved behavior and happier children and parents.

  • One approach that worked well for us was time-outs followed by explanations of why certain behaviors were hurtful, combined with words that boosted their self-esteem. It's essential for our children to know that they, themselves aren't bad and that everyone learns these lessons as they grow. Moreover, acknowledging good behavior is just as crucial as disciplining bad behavior.

  • Our Heavenly Father calls on us to discipline our children with love and patience, just as He lovingly disciplines those whom He cherishes above all else. Through this discipline, He blesses us and molds us into the people we were created to be.

Let's Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Life is filled with challenges, and we know that You never promised it would be easy. In the midst of our trials, help us learn the valuable lessons of obedience and let us experience the abundance of Your blessings.

May our hearts be filled with the same love and understanding You have for our children, realizing that their temporary struggles can lead to lasting righteousness and peace. Grant us the wisdom to discipline with love and patience, always seeking Your guidance. May our children grow into adults who love You, cherish integrity, and treat others as they would like to be treated.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
