Discovering Chicot State Park: Breakdowns to Blessings

Join us on an unforgettable journey to Chicot State Park, Louisiana, where every twist and turn brought unexpected adventures and heartfelt moments.

As we navigated the rough roads and vibrant culture of this enchanting state, we encountered challenges that tested our resolve and blessings that renewed our spirits.

Join us as we explore the beauty of Chicot State Park and share the highs and lows of our travel experience, where rough roads, breakdowns, and the kindness of strangers intertwined to create a tapestry of unforgettable moments.

Chicot State Park

Nestled in Ville Platte, Louisiana, Chicot State Park sprawls over 6,400 acres, offering a diverse range of attractions for all adventurers. We especially loved listening to the unique sounds of the swamp and collecting wood for our toasty fire.

At its heart lies Lake Chicot, a sprawling 2,000-acre reservoir perfect for boating, fishing, and kayaking. I am not brave enough to put our boards in alligator infested water, but if you look closely in the picture, you can see a brave kayaker.

Traverse scenic boardwalks through lush wetlands, with towering Cypress trees and dangling moss, you will feel like you are in a fairytale. Each step brings you closer to encounters with native wildlife like deer and alligators along the way.

During our stay at Loop B site 32, we enjoyed secluded camping with water and electric hookups amidst the trees, native birds, and raccoons...

The Dreaded Breakdown

Louisiana's roads tested our patience as one of our jacks came loose, leaving us dragging it for miles until we reached our campsite intact, albeit relieved.

Morning came with a truck that refused to start, and the kindness of willing neighbors and a helpful tow truck driver couldn't fix the issue. A tow to the Chevy dealership in Bunkie revealed a costly fuel system problem—a daunting $8,000 repair.

Surprised by the breakdown on our relatively young truck, the factory warranty came to our rescue, covering the entire repair bill. GM's exceptional service extended to providing a rental car, covering campground fees, reimbursing our groceries, and even purchasing two electric heaters and a honeypot for us.

Note: The honeypot has been a game changer for us, if you plan on full timing, I would suggest you purchase one.

Despite the challenge of transportation, the kindness of fellow campers shone through again as a neighbor offered to drive Scott to pick up the rental car.

While waiting for the repair, we seized the opportunity to explore surrounding cities such as Lafayette, Alexandria, Bouton Rouge, and Bunkie, indulging in local cuisine and gaining insights into the area's culture and community.

What seemed like a disaster turned into a chance to rest, exploration of different areas, connection with others, and the appreciation of the unexpected blessings along the way.

Food and Culture

This part of Louisiana was basically a culture shock for us. From a whole new beautiful, but swampy environment to poverty we had never seen or new existed within our country before. That being said, the culture is lively with music, the food was adventurous, and the people were happy and so friendly.

I can recommend three places to eat while in this area:

1. Prejeans in Lafayette:  Indulge in an authentic Cajun culinary experience at Prejeans, where every dish is a celebration of Louisiana's vibrant culture. Start your meal off with oysters Rockefeller, before diving into classics like etouffee and a bowl of their famous gumbo, rich with the flavors of the bayou. Feeling adventurous? Try their gator bites while being serenaded by live zydeco and Cajun music performers.

2. Rachael’s Cafe in Lafayette: Step into Rachel's Cafe and experience the warm embrace of Creole cuisine in a cozy atmosphere. Known for its authentic flavors and welcoming atmosphere, Rachael's Cafe is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

3. Griffin’s Antiques & Main Street Market in Bunkie: Discover a hidden gem in the heart of Bunkie at Griffin's Antiques & Main Street Market, where antique treasures and delectable treats await. Start your visit with some freshly baked rolls, and if you are lucky, the owner just might give you a historical tour of the place. Don't leave before rummaging through the antiques and treating yourself to delectable pie.

Bible Verse and Reflection

Ever pondered why troubles seem to hit all at once? That's how I felt during this time, grappling with financial strain and uncertainty. It felt like we had no escape, with no one familiar around, and navigating on a tight budget.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 speaks volumes:

"I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you; I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart."

  • Though it's tough to see the silver lining in hard times, often, we emerge with growth and transformation. God reshapes our hearts to be obedient, humble, and others-centered. Unfortunately, growth often comes through hardship.

  • Through it all, God remains in control, so there's no need to worry. Reflecting on being stranded in the beautiful-middle-of-nowhere Louisiana, I see the blessings and heart transformations that came from that trial. We can choose our thoughts amidst the storm, focusing on God's goodness.

  • As my husband likes to say, "Stop focusing on the dog poop and instead focus on the green grass around it." No life, whether in a stick-built home or a mobile one, is perfect, but God's blessings are always present; we just have to notice them."

Pray With Me

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your provision, protection, and for softening my heart. Help me to be tender and responsive. Your ways are always good and I fully entrust my will to you.
In Jesus' name, Amen
