Our RV Adventure: Exploring Texas State Parks and Embracing a Life of Service

Embarking on an RV adventure is not just about exploring new landscapes but also about breaking free from the chains of comfort culture and discovering the true meaning of abundance. Our journey through Texas State Parks epitomized this quest for freedom, adventure, and service. Although our visit to three of Texas' state parks barely scratched the surface of what this remarkable system has to offer, each stop left an indelible mark on our journey.

Note: If you plan on staying at more than one Texas State Park, look into getting yourself a park pass for discounted rates and to void the entrance fees.

Stephen F. Austin State Park: A Glimpse into Texas History

Our journey began at Stephen F. Austin State Park, where we immersed ourselves in the rich history of early Texas settlers. Amidst the serene Brazos River, we felt a sense of freedom from the constraints of city life, the noise of cars and television was replaced by the sounds of birds and children playing. The view of buildings was replaced by trees. The hustle and bustle of plans and Amazon deliveries was replaced by calm and peace.

This reminded me of the legacy of freedom in Christ that transcends comfort culture. As we roamed the lush trails and camped beneath majestic water oaks draped in trailing moss, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the introduction to this unique landscape and feeling a profound connection to God through nature.

Note: With full hook-ups and 30 amps of power for $30 per night, plus a $5 entry fee, it's an affordable escape, 30 minutes from Houston.

Monahans Sandhills State Park: Finding Oasis in the Desert

In the heart of West Texas, Monahans Sandhills State Park welcomed us with its towering white sand dunes and warm hospitality. The white sand right outside our doorstep reminded us of Destin, Florida, but without the ocean.

Amidst the vast desert landscape, we experienced the freedom of community service, an important area of life that I did not know how to bring into this lifestyle, but God showed us there is always a way. Stepping out of our comfort zones, we embraced the joy of giving back to the community through an impromptu marathon event.

Note: We snagged site #2, boasting 50 amps and water hookups, with stunning views of the desert skies. Even in mid-January, the weather was mostly pleasant, making it a perfect pit stop between El Paso and Fort Worth.

Galveston Island State Park: Discovering Resilience and Hospitality

Our final stop at Galveston Island State Park showcased the resilience of nature and the warmth of human connection. Here, we found solace in the beauty of the coastal landscape and the camaraderie of fellow travelers and the friendliest locals. The willingness of strangers to go out of their way for one another in this place inspires me to be more outgoing and social with strangers.

One of the best parts of this lifestyle is getting to wake up to differing spectacular views. Scott likes to joke that he told me he would give me a house with ocean views one day.

Note: We spent the most time here, hence a full blog post dedicated to it, check it out here.

Reflection: Finding Joy Beyond Comfort

As we traversed through these natural wonders, we reflected on the pervasive influence of comfort culture and the importance of genuine giving. We realized that true abundance is found not in material possessions but in meaningful experiences and authentic connections.

Bible Verse: Galatians 5:13

"For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another."

Finding Freedom in Serving Others

  • At first, we grappled with the challenge of how to give financially while adhering to a tight budget during our travels. The constraints seemed daunting, but as always, God provided a way. It dawned on us that true freedom isn't about accumulating wealth or possessions; it's about serving others with love and generosity.

  • Despite our constant moving, we discovered that opportunities to serve abound everywhere. Whether it's lending a helping hand to a fellow traveler, volunteering at local organizations along our journey, or simply offering kindness to strangers we meet along the way, there's always a way to make a difference.

  • Through these acts of service, we've learned to break free from the chains of selfishness and embrace a life filled with purpose and meaning. It's not about the size of our bank account or the possessions we accumulate; it's about getting outside of ourselves to serve someone else.

  • The timeless wisdom encapsulated in the phrase, “We keep what we have only by giving it away,” highlights the profound truth that the act of giving breeds abundance, benefiting both the giver and receiver alike.

Note: I would like to add that the opposite can be true as well. We can give too much of ourselves to others and, in turn, neglect our rest, families, and time with God. If this sounds like you, I suggest the book "The Emotionally Healthy Church" by Peter Scazzero; it is a very powerful book.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the gifts and comforts you have bestowed upon us. May you guide us in using our resources wisely and serving others with joy and discernment. May our journey be a testament to your love and grace, as we embrace the freedom we have in Christ and live a life of abundance and service.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
