This Labor Day marked our second year camping at Van Buren State Park in South Haven, Michigan.
Our church has had this gathering for over 20 years, and it’s easy to see why. The youth look forward to it every year, and for many, it’s filled with laughter, adventure, and meaningful moments.
Some experiences are so good, you want to keep coming back.
Michigan state parks are stunning, but they do have quirks.
For one you have to pay for your vehicle even when camping. Sites can be unlevel, tricky to back into, and only offer electric hook-ups. Fill up on water before you go! We usually bring a water bladder from Amazon—which makes life so much easier—but, of course, we forgot it this year.
Luckily, the bathrooms at Van Buren are top-notch: clean, individual push-button showers with plenty of hot water—and completely free.
Our Perfect Campsite
Our site was tucked in the back, backed up to trees and nature.
It had a fire pit, room for corn hole, and trees perfect for hammocks. Being far from the beach didn’t matter—Van Buren has beautiful walking paths, and I made my daily sunset stroll a ritual.
Lake Michigan at golden hour is breathtaking; sailboats, windsurfers, skim boarders—it almost feels like the ocean.
Lake Michigan at sunset—like an ocean without leaving the state.
Our son discovered skim boarding, and he hasn't stopped talking about it. Watching all the kids zip around on bikes, scooters, and one-wheels was fun too—they were pure joy in motion.
Stepping Out of Comfort Zones
One of my favorite moments: my husband, Scott, gave the Sunday teaching. First time ever. Nervous? Absolutely (although he wouldn't admit it until it was over). But he did amazing. Watching him say yes to something challenging reminded me that growth often comes from stepping outside our comfort zones.
The Bible encourages this courage: Philippians 4:13
"I can do all things through him who strengthens me."
This verse is so well-known that sometimes people overlook it—but I challenge you to really meditate on it and consider how it applies to your own life. Truly embracing it means trusting God in the hard things, the scary things, and the things that stretch you the most.
Hard things are scary—but do them anyway.
Adventures Beyond the Campsite
We loved exploring South Haven with friends:
-
Dutch Farm Market – sweet peaches, salted caramel ice cream made with easily digestible A2 milk (seriously, Google it!), a playground, and a tractor ride with bus seats for comfort.
-
Downtown South Haven – coffee at We Coffee, a church-connected shop that gives back, and cinnamon ice cream at South Pier Creamery.
-
Walks to the lighthouse—always soul-filling, every single time.
One friend even rented a pre-set-up trailer—delivered, set up, then taken away when they left. No towing, no dumping tanks. Honestly, that sounds heavenly.
Adventure often finds you when you least expect it.
Reflections
Coming back to the same place every year might seem repetitive to some (like me!), but there’s something special about community, nature, and shared experiences that never grows old.
Watching our youth and friends embrace this week reminded me that life isn’t just about new adventures—it’s about fully living the moments we’re given, even if they’re familiar.
Community + adventure + nature = memories that last a lifetime.
Top Tips for Camping at Van Buren State Park
-
Water First! – Sites only have electric hookups, so make sure your water tanks are full. A water bladder is a lifesaver.
-
Choose Your Site Wisely – Some sites are unlevel and tricky to back into. Back-row sites offer privacy, trees, and space for games.
-
Bathrooms Are Great – Individual push-button showers, lots of hot water, completely free. Please still wear shower shoes.
-
Pack for Weather – Nights can get chilly, especially for tent campers. Electric heaters are a lifesaver!
-
Explore Beyond the Campground – Dutch Farm Market, downtown coffee, and walks to the lighthouse are must-dos.
-
Try Something New – Skim boarding, meeting someone new, or bible studies on the beach—step outside your comfort zone.
-
Sunset Strolls Are a Must – Make time for golden-hour walks. The view over Lake Michigan never gets old.
A great campsite is one thing, but the memories come from the little adventures you add to it.
Prayer
Lord,Thank You for adventure, for challenge, and for courage. Thank You for the beauty of creation, the laughter of our youth, and the joy of community. Strengthen us to say yes to the hard things, trust in Your presence, and see Your hand in both the familiar and the new. May our lives reflect Your goodness, courage, and love.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
