When Following Jesus Looks Like You’ve Lost Your Mind (And Why That’s Okay)

There have been a lot of moments in our life where people have looked at us like we were crazy.

Selling Our Home To Move Into Our New Fifth Wheel- Full Time (2021)

  • When we chose to homeschool.
  • When we sold everything to live full-time in an RV.
  • When Scott stepped away from a steady job.

  • When we hit the road—not for one year, not two—but three.
  • When we moved to a small town in Indiana where we didn’t know a single person.

  • When we went to Africa with people we had just met.

And now, again…
In this new season—watching our daughter step into adulthood, graduating early, heading toward college…

while we sit here quietly asking,
“Lord… what’s next?”

When It Doesn’t Make Sense

From the outside, it doesn’t always make sense.

People see security as a house, a paycheck, a plan.

And there’s truth in that—there is wisdom in stability. There is goodness in building something steady.

But there is also something else.

There is a life that is lived following Jesus, not just agreeing with Him.

And sometimes that life doesn’t look safe—it looks uncertain, uncomfortable… even irresponsible to others.

You Might Not Fit—and That’s Okay

Father and Daughter Talking on a Bridge

We were talking with our daughter recently, and we were talking about that feeling of not fitting in.

And we told her something we have had to learn over and over again:

Sometimes you don’t fit… because you’re not supposed to.

Jesus said:

“A disciple is not above his teacher…”
 (Matt 10:24)

If the world misunderstood Him,

If people questioned Him,

If His life didn’t fit into their expectations…

Why would ours?

Staying Isn’t Wrong. Going Isn’t Better.

Front Porch in Summer

Not everyone is called to live the way we have.

Some are called to stay.
To build.
To plant deep roots in one place.

And that is good. That is faithful.

Others are called to go.
To step into the unknown.
To live with open hands.

That is also good. That is also faithful.

Some are called to do both.

This isn’t about copying someone else’s life.

It’s about obedience.

A Dangerous Kind of Comfortable

Boy Walking on Ledge in Alaska

Here’s the part that’s been sitting heavy on my heart:

If I feel completely comfortable… I have to ask why.

If the world fully accepts me,

if nothing about my life is questioned,

if I blend in perfectly…

👉 Am I really following Jesus?

Because Jesus also said:

“If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.” (Matthew 10:25)

If they misunderstood Him,

they will misunderstand us.

If they questioned Him,

they will question us.

So if I’m never questioned… maybe I need to ask what I’m aligning with.

What We’ve Learned

We don’t have everything figured out. Not even close.

We’re still in a season of:

trusting,
praying, and not knowing what’s next

But this we know: God has always been faithful.

Every step that looked “crazy” to others

was a step where He showed up.

Final Thought

Double Rainbow in the Desert

So whether you are called to stay… or to go…
to build… or to step out…
to hold steady… or to take a risk…

Just make sure of one thing:

You’re following Him.

Because at the end of the day, that’s the only place real security is found.

And if it looks a little crazy to the world?

You’re probably right where you need to be.

 Prayer

Lord,
Thank You for being steady when everything else feels uncertain.
Help us to trust You even when we don’t understand the path ahead.
Give us courage to follow You in obedience—whether that means staying or going.
Remind us that we don’t have to fit into this world to belong to You.
And lead us faithfully into whatever comes next.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
